Slate replacement
Slipped, cracked and missing slates replaced and matched, or a whole slate roof stripped and relaid when the nails have given up.
in short
AltHome replaces slipped, cracked and missing slates across Kerry, Cork and Limerick, matched to the roof and held with copper or stainless clips. When slates slip all over the roof because the iron nails have rusted, the honest answer is to strip and relay, reusing good slates and renewing the felt and battens. Single slates take one visit, a full relay a week or two.
what decides it
One slate, or the whole roof
A slate roof usually fails at the nails, not the slates. Natural slate lasts a very long time, but the iron nails that hold it rust through, and slates start slipping one at a time. A few slipped slates are an easy repair: the slate is refitted, or replaced with a matching one, and held with a copper or stainless clip hooked over the batten, since a slate cannot be nailed back in without lifting the ones above it. When slates are slipping across the whole roof, every nail is at the same stage of failure, and the honest answer is to strip and relay. That is also when we replace the felt, which on older roofs is often brittle or missing altogether, and the battens, and add ventilation if the roof has none. Good natural slates can be reused and topped up with reclaimed or new slate of the same size, colour and thickness. On newer houses many slate looking roofs are fibre cement. Those are replaced with fibre cement, and on roofs from before about 2000 they may contain asbestos, so we check before cutting or removing them and handle them accordingly. Matching matters on a visible elevation, so we source slate to suit your roof rather than using whatever is to hand.
Natural or fibre cement?
If you are relaying the roof, the choice matters for the next fifty years. Natural slate costs more but lasts far longer and looks better with age. Fibre cement is lighter and cheaper, with a shorter life. We price both so you can decide on real numbers.
the work
What is included in slate replacement?
- Identify whether the roof is natural slate or fibre cement, and test older fibre cement.
- Refit slipped slates or replace cracked ones with matching slate on clips.
- Check whether the slipping is isolated or across the whole roof.
- Strip and relay where nail fatigue is general, reusing good slate.
- Replace the felt and battens and add ventilation while the roof is open.
- Photograph the work, since you cannot see it from the ground.

What goes around it
Slate roofs have a few other parts that tend to need attention at the same time.
asked
Slate replacement: common questions
Why do my slates keep slipping?
Usually the nails have rusted through. A few slipped slates are a repair. Slates slipping all over the roof mean every nail is failing and the roof should be stripped and relaid.
Can you match old slates?
Usually, with reclaimed slate or new slate of the same size and colour. We bring samples before we start.
Are my slates asbestos?
Natural slate is not. Fibre cement slates on houses built before about 2000 may be. We check before cutting or removing them, and handle them safely if they are.
How much does it cost to replace a slate?
A few slates reachable from a roof ladder is a short visit. More slates, a steep or high roof needing scaffold, or hard to match slate adds to it. A full strip and relay is priced separately after a survey.
How long does a natural slate roof last?
Good natural slate can last 100 years or more. The nails and felt usually fail long before the slate, which is why slate roofs are often relaid with the same slates.
