Attic insulation
Your attic brought up to a proper depth of insulation, with the loft still ventilated, the pipes and tank protected, and a boarded walkway so you can still use the space.
in short
AltHome insulates attics across Kerry, Cork and Limerick to around 300 mm, laid in two layers across and between the joists, with the eaves kept ventilated, the water tank and pipes protected and a boarded walkway for access. It is one of the cheapest energy upgrades for an Irish house and an average attic is done in one day.
what decides it
Deep enough, and without choking the roof
Heat rises, and in most Irish houses built before the 2000s the attic has somewhere between nothing and 100 mm of old quilt that has slumped and gone patchy. Bringing it up to around 300 mm is one of the cheapest energy improvements you can make to a house, and it is usually done in a day. The laying is easy. Doing it without creating a new problem is the part that matters. Insulation goes down in two layers, the first between the joists and the second across them, so the timbers stop acting as cold bridges. It stops short of the eaves, and we fit eaves vents or trays so air can still move from the soffit into the roof space, because a well insulated attic is a colder attic, and a cold attic with no air movement collects condensation on the underside of the felt and the roof timbers. The area under the water tank is left clear so heat from the room below keeps it from freezing, and then the tank and every pipe in the cold space are lagged. Downlights in the ceiling below get covers so the insulation does not sit on them. The loft hatch is insulated and draught stripped, since an unsealed hatch is a chimney for warm damp air. If you want to keep storing things up there, raised boarding goes in above the new depth so the insulation is not crushed, because squashed insulation loses most of what it was put there to do.
Grants, and what we check first
SEAI grants have been available for attic insulation, and the amounts and conditions change, so we check what currently applies to your house before you commit. Before anything goes down we look at the roof from inside: signs of leaks, damp timber or old condensation staining are dealt with first, because insulating over a wet problem only hides it.
the work
What is included in attic insulation?
- Check the roof space for leaks, damp timber and signs of condensation before anything is laid.
- Clear old material where it is compressed, contaminated or falling apart.
- Lay the first layer between the joists and the second across them to the full depth.
- Keep the eaves open with vents or trays so the roof can still breathe.
- Lag the tank and every pipe in the cold space, and cover the downlights.
- Insulate and seal the hatch, and board a walkway or storage area above the new depth.
4 steps
How long does it take to insulate an attic?
You get in touch
Tell us roughly when the house was built and whether you use the attic for storage. We answer the same day.
We come and look
We go up, measure what is there, check the ventilation and the tank, and tell you if a grant may apply. Then a written price.
We insulate it
Usually one day, with the landing sheeted and the hatch area cleaned down after.
You sign it off
We give you photos of the finished loft, the vents and the lagging, for your records and any grant paperwork.

Insulating the attic is usually the first step. These are the jobs that tend to follow it.

Attic insulation: common questions
How much insulation should an attic have?
Around 300 mm of mineral wool across the joists is the usual target for an existing house here. Less than about 150 mm is worth topping up. Going much beyond 300 mm gives diminishing returns and can crowd the eaves.
Will it make the roof damp?
It can if it is done badly, because the loft gets colder. Keeping the eaves ventilated, sealing the hatch and dealing with any bathroom fan that vents into the attic prevents it. We check all three.
Can I still store things up there?
Yes, if raised boarding goes in above the insulation. Laying boards straight onto the joists would crush it and waste most of the benefit.
How much does attic insulation cost?
The attic floor area, the old insulation to remove or top up, eaves ventilation, boarding for storage and the tank and pipe lagging set the price. It is usually a one day job for a typical house. We give a fixed price after a look in the attic.
Is there a grant for attic insulation in Ireland?
SEAI offers a grant for attic insulation under its home energy schemes. The work must be done by an SEAI registered contractor and the grant approved before work starts, so check the current amount and rules on the SEAI website first.
