Plastering and skimming

Flat walls and ceilings, skimmed and left ready for paint, whether that means a fresh skim over old plaster or a full replaster back to the block.

in short

AltHome plasters and skims walls and ceilings across Kerry, Cork and Limerick, from a fresh skim over sound old plaster to a full replaster back to the block. We check first for hollow, blown plaster and for damp, because skimming over either fails. A room takes two to five days, then about a week of gentle heat and ventilation before painting.

how to choose

Skim over the old wall, or take it back and start again?

The question is really about what is behind the surface. Tap the wall. A dull, hollow sound over a wide area means the old plaster has parted from the block, and skimming over it only buys a year or two before it cracks along the same lines. In that case it comes off, the wall is cleaned down, and it is floated and skimmed again. Where the plaster is sound and the trouble is the surface, artex, small cracks, patches from an old fireplace, then a skim coat is the right answer and costs a fraction of the alternative. The second thing to check is damp. Plaster will not fix a wet wall. If a chimney breast is staining, or a patch by the floor keeps coming back, the cause is outside or under the floor and it needs sorting first. We would rather tell you that at the survey than skim it and watch it return. For new walls the choice is between traditional sand and cement, floated and skimmed, and plasterboard on dabs with a skim over it. Board is faster, warmer to the touch and easier to run services behind. Sand and cement is tougher where things get knocked, so it still earns its place in halls, utility rooms and anywhere a garden tool lives. Drying time is the part people underestimate. Fresh plaster is dark and needs days, not hours, before paint. A mist coat of watered down emulsion goes on first, and full coats after that. Paint it early and it peels. Ventilate the room, keep the heat gentle and steady, and give it the week.

Can you plaster one room while we live in the house?

Yes, and most of our interior work is done that way. The room is emptied or the furniture is stacked and sheeted, the floor is covered, and the doorway is screened. Plastering is wet work rather than dusty work. The dust comes from taking old plaster off, so where that is needed we seal the room and run the extraction.

the work

What is included in plastering and skimming?

  • Check what is behind the surface and say whether a skim will hold.
  • Take off blown plaster, cut out cracks and rake the joints where needed.
  • Sheet the floors, screen the door and protect anything that stays in the room.
  • Board where boarding is the answer, then tape, bead the corners and float the walls.
  • Skim two coats and trowel it flat, including reveals and ceilings.
  • Leave the site clean, take the waste with us and tell you when it is ready for paint.

asked

Plastering: common questions

How long before I can paint it?

Give it a week in a ventilated room with gentle background heat, and longer in winter or where the room is closed up. The wall tells you: it goes from dark and patchy to an even pale colour. Paint before that and the first coat traps moisture and peels. If you are on a deadline we will say what is realistic rather than agree to it.

Can you match the old plaster in a period house?

In most cases yes, including lime work where the wall needs to breathe. Older houses with solid walls often do, and covering them in the wrong material traps damp. Tell us the house is old and we will look at what is there before we quote.

Do you do small jobs, like one ceiling?

Yes. One ceiling, a patch after a leak or a single wall are all normal work. Small jobs are priced on the visit and usually done in a day.

How much does it cost to plaster a room?

A skim over sound plaster is the cheapest. Taking off blown plaster, reboarding or floating the walls first adds labour and drying time. Ceilings, reveals and the number of corners also count. We give a fixed price after a free survey.

What is the difference between plastering and skimming?

Skimming is a thin finish coat, two or three millimetres, over a sound surface or new plasterboard. Plastering in the full sense means floating the wall with a base coat first and then skimming, used where the old plaster has come off or the wall is new block.
