Inside the house, from stud to skim
Walls, ceilings and partitions. What the wall is made of decides what it costs to change, so that is where each page starts.

in short
AltHome's interior work across Kerry, Cork and Limerick covers the inside of the house from stud to skim: plasterboard and stud walls, plastering and skimming, ceilings, dry lining and insulating walls, window reveals, partitions and knocking rooms together. The order of work matters more than the finish, so damp and structure are sorted before anything is boarded or skimmed.
the order
Why the order of work matters more than the finish
Interior work goes wrong when it is done out of order. Skim before the stud work has settled and the crack comes back. Lay the floor before the plastering and you pay for the floor twice.
These pages are split by what the job physically is, not by what it is called. Walls is the decision page, what the wall is made of and what it can carry. Plasterboard is the build method. Plastering is the finish. They are three different questions and they get three different pages.
8 pages
The eight jobs
Open plan without building. Light, sightlines and how a space gets divided.
PartitionsDividing a room properly. Structure, sound and where the door goes.
WallsThe decision page. What the wall is made of, what it carries, what it costs to move.
Plasterboard and stud workBuilding the wall. Stud spacing, board type, and what it can carry afterwards.
CeilingsCracks, stains and sagging, and whether it is the ceiling or the roof above it.
Reveals and window returnsThe detail around a new window, and the cold bridge nobody mentions.
PlasteringThe finish. Sand and cement, browning, and what a flat wall actually takes.
Skimming and fillingBringing a tired wall back without rebuilding it.

Interior work: common questions
Written by the AltHome crew. Last reviewed September 2026.
What order should interior renovation work be done in?
Structural work and openings first, then first fix electrics and plumbing, then stud walls, boarding and insulation, then plastering and skimming, then second fix, painting and finally flooring.
Can interior work be done while we live in the house?
Yes, room by room. Rooms are sheeted and screened, dust is extracted during strip out, and plastering is wet work rather than dusty work.
How long does new plaster take to dry before painting?
Usually around a week in a heated, ventilated room, longer in winter or after a full replaster. The wall turns an even pale colour when it is ready for the mist coat.

One room or the whole floor
We price either. A single ceiling gets the same written quote as a full refit.
