Timber, cut and fitted

Staircases, doors and old timber put back the way it was made. The same bench that makes the furniture in the shop.

in short

AltHome's carpentry work across Kerry, Cork and Limerick covers staircases, doors and fire doors, furniture assembly and the restoration of old timber: stairs, sash windows, doors, beams and furniture. It is done by the same workshop that makes the furniture in the AltHome shop, so repair is preferred to replacement wherever the original timber is sound.

The shop and the site are the same workshop

Carpentry is where the two halves of this business meet. The crew that cuts a staircase string is the crew that welds the table base. Same timber, same tools, same week.

So every page here points at the part of the shop that came out of the same work. If you like the way a stair looks, the handrail stock and the finish are on the shop side too.

Carpentry: common questions

Written by the AltHome crew. Last reviewed September 2026.

Is it better to restore or replace old timber stairs and windows?

Old timber is usually denser and more stable than modern softwood, so restoring sound original stairs and sash windows is often better value and lasts longer. Replacement makes sense only where the main structure has failed.

Does AltHome make furniture to order?

Yes. The workshop makes furniture and décor in timber, steel and concrete, ready made and to order, sold through the AltHome shop.

Do fire doors need to be fitted by a professional?

A fire door only performs as tested when the door, frame, hinges, closer and seals are fitted as a certified set. It should be fitted by someone who knows the manufacturer's installation requirements.
