in short

AltHome assembles flat pack and fitted furniture in homes and offices across Kerry, Cork and Limerick, from wardrobes and beds to kitchen units and desks. Every piece is levelled so doors line up, tall and wall hung items are fixed into the wall with fixings chosen for that wall, and the packaging leaves with us. Most rooms are done the same day.

what decides it

Built square, fixed safely, finished properly

Flat pack furniture goes together easily when the floor is level, the walls are straight and you have the right fixings. In most houses none of that is true. A wardrobe assembled on a sloping floor racks out of square and the doors never close in line. Units fixed into plasterboard with the plugs from the box pull out. And tall furniture that is not anchored can tip over, which is a real danger with children in the house. We assemble to the instructions from the manufacturer, then do what the instructions cannot: level and pack the base so doors and drawers line up, adjust hinges and runners so everything closes evenly, and fix tall and wall hung items into studs, noggins or masonry with fixings chosen for that wall. Fitted and built in pieces are scribed to uneven walls and ceilings so they look made for the room, with fillers and trims closing the gaps. We also assemble office furniture, beds, shelving and garden furniture, as well as pieces made in our own workshop. At the end the packaging, and there is always a lot of it, leaves with us.

If you might move it later

If you are likely to move the furniture, or you rent, tell us. We use fixings that come out cleanly and note where they are, so taking the piece down later does not mean repairing a wall.

Workshop pieces, heavy items and wall fixings

Pieces made in our own workshop arrive with the people who made them, who assemble and fit them on site and adjust them to the room. Heavy items such as oak tables, concrete tops and steel framed shelving are carried in with enough hands and with the floors protected. Before anything is hung on a wall we check what the wall is made of. A stud wall needs the fixing into the timber or a proper cavity anchor, while an old wall of soft brick or lime plaster needs longer fixings set deeper. We scan for pipes and cables before drilling, every time. Where the job grows beyond assembly, a full fitted wardrobe or a run of kitchen units with worktops, we quote it as carpentry, with scribing, trims and cut outs priced properly.

asked

Furniture assembly: common questions

Do you fix wardrobes to the wall?

Yes, always for tall pieces. Anti tip fixing is essential, especially with children in the house, and we use fixings that suit your wall.

Can you assemble furniture from any shop?

Yes, flat pack from any retailer, as well as our own workshop pieces and office furniture.

What if parts are missing or damaged?

We check everything before starting. If something is missing we tell you straight away so you can get it from the retailer, and we come back to finish.

Do you mount TVs, shelves and mirrors?

Yes. TV brackets, floating shelves, mirrors and bathroom cabinets, fixed to suit the wall and checked for pipes and cables first.

Can you take furniture apart for a move?

Yes. We dismantle it, bag and label the fixings, and rebuild it at the new address if it is within Kerry, Cork or Limerick.

How do you price assembly?

Per piece for single items and per room for several. Larger fitted jobs are priced after a short visit.

How long does it take to assemble a wardrobe?

A standard double wardrobe is usually a couple of hours including levelling and fixing it to the wall. Large sliding door or fitted systems take longer, often most of a day, because they are scribed to the walls and ceiling.

Can you assemble furniture on the day it is delivered?

Often, yes. Tell us the delivery date and what is coming and we book the visit for the same day or the day after, so boxes are not sitting in the hall for a week.
