Fibreglass GRP roofing
Flat roofs laid in glass reinforced polyester, one seamless layer bonded to a new deck, with the trims, upstands and outlets formed as part of the same skin.
in short
AltHome lays fibreglass GRP flat roofs across Kerry, Cork and Limerick over extensions, dormers, garages and porches. GRP forms one seamless skin, with trims and upstands bonded in, on a new rigid board deck laid to falls. It needs dry weather to cure. A well laid GRP roof typically lasts 25 years or more, and a small roof takes a few dry days.
what decides it
The deck, the weather and the edges
GRP is a strong choice for small and medium flat roofs here, over extensions, dormers, garages and porches, because it forms a single seamless skin with no joints for water to find. It is also unforgiving of bad preparation. The deck underneath has to be sound, dry and rigid, which on most jobs means stripping the old felt and laying a new board deck rather than going over whatever is there, because any movement in the deck will crack the laminate. Falls matter just as much. A flat roof is never truly flat: it needs a fall to an outlet or gutter, and water that ponds on a GRP roof shortens its life, so where the existing roof holds water we set new firrings to correct it before decking. The laminate itself is laid as resin and glass mat, rolled out to drive out the air, with the edge trims, drip trims and upstands bonded into the same skin so the edges are part of the roof rather than stuck onto it. Then a topcoat that protects it from sunlight. The one thing nobody controls is weather: resin will not cure in rain or on a damp deck, so GRP is laid on dry days and covered at the end of each one. We would rather move a day than laminate onto a wet board.
Where the roof meets the wall
Most flat roof leaks are not in the middle of the roof but at the upstand where it meets the house wall. We take the GRP up the wall, then cut a chase and fit a lead or GRP flashing over it, so rain running down the wall cannot get behind the upstand.
the work
What is included in a GRP roof?
- Strip the old covering and check the joists and deck underneath.
- Correct the falls with firrings where the roof holds water.
- Lay a new, dry, rigid deck, fixed and taped at the joints.
- Bond edge trims, drip trims and upstands into the same laminate.
- Lay and roll out the resin and glass mat, then apply the topcoat.
- Form the outlets and flash the upstand into the wall properly.
4 steps
How long does it take to lay a GRP roof?
You get in touch
Send a photo of the roof and tell us roughly how big it is and whether it leaks. We answer the same day.
We come and look
We check the deck, the joists and the falls, and whether water ponds. Then a written price.
We lay it
Strip, deck, laminate, topcoat. Usually a few dry days for a small roof.
You sign it off
We water test the outlets, send you photos from the roof and leave the guarantee in writing.

asked
Fibreglass GRP roofing: common questions
How long does a GRP roof last?
A properly laid GRP roof on a sound deck should last 25 years or more. Most early failures come from a poor deck, ponding water or bad edge detailing rather than the material itself.
Can GRP go over my old felt roof?
Not reliably. GRP needs a clean, rigid, dry deck to bond to. In almost every case the old covering, and usually the deck, come off.
Can I walk on it?
Yes, for maintenance, it is hard wearing. For regular foot traffic, such as a balcony, it is finished with an anti slip topcoat.
How much does a GRP roof cost?
The area, stripping the old covering, a new deck and firrings, and the number of edges and outlets set the price. Small roofs cost more per square metre because the edge details take the time. We give a fixed price after a survey.
Is GRP better than EPDM?
GRP suits small roofs with complicated edges and can be walked on. EPDM is a single rubber sheet that suits larger, simpler roofs and flexes more with movement. Either lasts if the deck and edges are right.
