Floors, laid on a base that is ready for them

The floor goes in last, after the walls and ceilings are finished. It is also the part of the house you touch every day, so it gets laid once and laid properly.

in short

AltHome's flooring work across Kerry, Cork and Limerick covers floor preparation and floor laying in engineered wood, laminate, vinyl and tile. The floor goes in last, after walls and ceilings are finished, and every job starts with the base: concrete tested for moisture and levelled to about 3 mm over 2 m, timber subfloors made sound.

the base

A floor is only as good as what it sits on

Most floor problems start underneath. A screed that was not dry, a subfloor out of level, boards laid before the plastering was done. The finish gets the blame, but the cause is the base.

So every job starts there. We check the subfloor for level and moisture before we price the finish, and the written quote says what the base needs.

Flooring: common questions

Written by the AltHome crew. Last reviewed September 2026.

Which floor is best with underfloor heating?

Engineered wood, vinyl and tile all work well with underfloor heating when the product is rated for it. Solid wood and thick carpet underlay are the least suitable.

How long does a new screed take to dry before flooring?

Roughly a day per millimetre for the first 40 mm, and longer beyond that or in cold weather. We test with a moisture meter rather than go by the calendar.

Can I buy my own flooring and have AltHome fit it?

Yes. We check the product suits the room and the subfloor before fitting.
