Room painting
Walls, ceilings and woodwork painted properly, with the filling and sanding that decides how the finish looks long after the smell has gone.
in short
AltHome paints walls, ceilings and woodwork in homes across Kerry, Cork and Limerick, with the filling, sanding, caulking and spot priming done before the finish coats. Fresh plaster gets a mist coat first. A typical room takes one to three days including the preparation, and it can be used again the same evening we finish. Priced after a free survey.
what you pay for
Why do two quotes for the same room differ so much?
Because most of painting is not painting. Two crews can quote the same square metres and mean completely different amounts of preparation. Preparation is filling, sanding, caulking the gaps along skirting and architrave, washing down where there is grease, and spot priming the patches so they do not flash through. That is where the hours are, and it is the difference between a room that looks good in the evening light and one that looks fine only from the door. Ask any quote what preparation is included, and ask how many coats. The second variable is what is underneath. Fresh plaster takes a mist coat first, a watered down emulsion that soaks in and gives the full coats something to hold. A wall that has been papered takes longer than anyone expects, because the paste has to come off and the surface is rarely flat afterwards. A dark colour going to a pale one needs an extra coat, sometimes two, and a strong colour on top of white needs a matched primer to stop it looking patchy. Woodwork is its own job again: degreasing, sanding, filling, priming bare timber, then two finish coats, with drying time between them that cannot be rushed in a damp house. Third is the paint. Cheap trade emulsion covers less, marks easier and cannot be wiped, so a hall or a child’s bedroom in the cheap tin costs more within two years. We price with a mid range trade paint by default and tell you where it is worth going up, usually the hall, the stairs and the kitchen. If you want a specific brand or colour system we will use it and the price follows the tin.
Can you paint around us while we live here?
Yes. We work room by room, move and sheet the furniture, mask the floors and put things back at the end of each day where we can. Modern water based paints have little smell and are touch dry in hours. If there is a baby in the house or someone with a sensitive chest, say so and we will use low odour products and keep the room ventilated.
the work
What is included in room painting?
- Move and sheet the furniture, mask the floors and take the switch plates off.
- Fill, sand and caulk, then spot prime the repairs so they do not show through.
- Mist coat fresh plaster and prime bare timber before anything else.
- Cut in the edges by brush and roll two full coats on walls and ceilings.
- Paint the woodwork last, with drying time between coats.
- Put the room back, clean up and take the waste with us.

asked
Room painting: common questions
Do you supply the paint?
Either way. We usually supply and the price includes it, at trade cost rather than marked up twice. If you want a particular brand or a mixed colour you can buy it yourself, and then the quote is labour and materials like masking and filler only.
Will you match a colour I already have?
If you have the tin or the code, yes. Without either, a colour can be matched by eye from a fragment in most paint shops, and the match is close but rarely exact. On one wall that shows. On a whole room repaint it does not.
Is one coat ever enough?
Rarely, and we will not quote for it. Same colour on a sound wall can look fine in one coat on the day and patchy in a year. Two coats is our standard, and dark to light takes three.
How much does it cost to paint a room?
Room size, the amount of preparation, whether ceilings and woodwork are included, colour changes that need extra coats, and the paint quality set the price. Two quotes can differ because one includes proper preparation and the other does not, so ask what is included.
How long should I wait to paint new plaster?
Until it has dried to an even pale colour, usually about a week in a heated, ventilated room and longer in winter. Then a mist coat of watered down emulsion goes on before the full coats.
