Wall painting
Feature walls, colour drenching, limewash and specialist wall finishes, for the walls you want noticed rather than just painted.
in short
AltHome paints feature walls, colour drenched rooms, limewash and mineral paint finishes in homes and businesses across Kerry, Cork and Limerick. Colours are sampled on your own wall and checked in the light the room is used in, and strong colours get stricter preparation because they show every flaw. A feature wall or room takes one to three days.
what decides it
When a wall is the point of the room
Most painting is about getting a clean, even finish on every wall. This is the other kind: the wall behind a bed or a sofa, a hallway painted top to bottom in one strong colour, a chimney breast, a stairwell that runs up three floors. That work is less forgiving. Strong and dark colours show every flaw, so the preparation is stricter, and the light in the room is checked at the time of day the room is actually used. Colour drenching, where walls, ceiling, skirting and woodwork are all painted in one colour or tones of it, needs a painter who can cut in cleanly where there are no contrasting lines to hide behind. Specialist finishes are a craft of their own. Limewash gives a soft, cloudy, moving surface that suits old houses and plastered walls, and because it is breathable it is also the right finish on solid walls that need to dry out. Mineral and clay paints do the same with a wider choice of colour. Stripes, blocks, arches and geometric shapes are set out with a laser and a sharp edge. We always paint sample patches on the actual wall, because a colour on a chart looks different on a north facing wall in November.
Old walls and breathable paint
On older houses with lime plaster or solid walls, ordinary vinyl emulsion traps moisture and eventually flakes. Limewash and mineral paints let the wall breathe while looking better. We check what the wall is made of before recommending a paint.
What a feature wall costs, and why
The price is set less by the size of the wall than by the surface and the finish. A single wall in a flat emulsion over sound plaster is a morning of work. The same wall in a deep colour with a sheen needs filling, sanding and a primer tinted towards the colour, then two or three full coats, because thin coverage in a dark shade shows as cloudy patches in daylight. Limewash goes on in several thin brushed coats, and the look depends on the hand that applies it, so it is priced by the wall rather than by the square metre. Colour drenching takes longest of all: ceiling, walls, skirting, architraves and doors are all prepared and painted to the same standard, with no contrasting line to hide a wavy cut. Stripes, arches and shapes add setting out time rather than paint. The quote lists each wall, the paint system and the number of coats, so you can see where the money goes and drop or swap anything before we start.

asked
Wall painting: common questions
Can you paint a feature wall in a dark colour?
Yes. Dark colours need more preparation and usually more coats, and we sample first so you see it in your own light.
What is limewash?
A traditional breathable paint made from lime, with a soft, varied finish. It suits old walls and lime plaster, and it lets moisture out rather than trapping it.
Can you match a colour from a photo?
We can get close with samples, but screens and prints vary. Sampling on your wall is the only way to be sure.
Will limewash rub off on clothes?
Properly applied on a suitable surface, no. It can chalk slightly on a wall that is too smooth or was sealed with vinyl paint, which is why we check the wall first and use a lime primer where it is needed.
Can you paint over wallpaper?
We do not recommend it. Paper can bubble and the seams show through strong colours. We strip it, make good the wall and then paint.
How soon can we hang pictures?
Most emulsions are ready for pictures and light furniture the next day. Limewash and mineral paints take a few days to cure fully, and we tell you how long for the product we used.
How much does a feature wall cost to paint?
A single wall in a strong colour is a short job; a colour drenched room with ceiling and woodwork, or a limewash finish applied in several coats, takes longer. The preparation the wall needs matters most. We price it after seeing the wall.
Is limewash suitable for Irish houses?
Yes, especially old houses with solid stone or lime plastered walls, because limewash is breathable and lets the wall dry out. It is not for walls painted in modern emulsion unless a suitable primer is used first.
